We wanted to thank you for supporting Canadian businesses and continually shopping local this holiday season. We encourage you to create a skincare routine that you feel confident in with reliable our products all year around! See you in 2023!
]]>Plus, we’ve all struggled with different skincare brands that claim to be made with all-natural ingredients but clearly aren’t. It ends up staining your favourite clothing, discolouring after a couple of uses or transforming into a different texture than originally purchased. So when it comes to all-natural creams you want to be able to understand ingredients without having to research them on your own or go through an endless amount of scientific papers to know what it does for your skin.
So we’re here to help understand the main ingredients in our creams, the benefits, and what it does for your skin. We do all the research for you so you don’t have to. Starting with The Amaze Cream, a remarkably potent nutrient-enriched cream that dramatically improves skin tone and minimizes the appearance of fine lines after a few applications. Its blend of Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10 and Hyaluronic Acid work together effortlessly to improve skin elasticity, increasing its energy to combat free radicals to keep your skin healthier. Not only does it prevent signs of ageing it also acts as a primer to create an ideal facial canvas to hold onto whatever comes afterwards — like makeup, foundation, sunscreen, or concealer.
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), is a sulfur-containing fatty acid compound commonly found in mitochondria - the powerhouse of the cell - necessary for different enzymatic functions. It plays an important role in various chemical reactions, acting as a cofactor for energy generation in the cell. It is a key part of the metabolic machinery that turns glucose (blood sugar) into energy for the body's needs. The most unique characteristic of ALA over other antioxidant substances is that it reacts as both lipid and water-soluble compounds. Because of this, it’s able to infiltrate all parts of the cell, fight against inflammation and boosts glutathione levels in the skin. You can also find high ALA levels in various foods such as red meat, spinach, broccoli, potatoes and carrots.
CoEnzyme Q10 is a natural free-radical neutralizer, naturally produced by the body. Contains a memory factor, that works to normalize the aged cells back to their healthy states. The topical application of Co-Q10 delivers a sustainable amount of antioxidants that soothe the skin and restores cell regeneration, resulting in well-maintained skin by normalizing the effects of hormones and the ageing process.
Hyaluronic Acid is a highly-esteemed ingredient in the cosmetics industry. It’s a natural humectant found in our bodies that plays an important role in tissue hydration and water transport mainly due to its enormously high water-binding capacity, holding up to one thousand times its water weight.
As we age, our skin becomes drier, thinner, and looser, leading to wrinkling, and a decrease in skin moisture. HA is naturally and constantly renewed because of its rapid degradation, but its renewal tends to slow with age and external aggressions. Therefore adding it to your regular skincare routine helps replenish and sustain optimal hyaluronic acid turnover. Other benefits aside from its powerful anti-aging effects are restoring skin brightness and improving skin barrier function.
Lavender Oil is a well-known, highly effective medicine in its own right and is used in many cosmetic products as well. Because of its sedative, carminative, anti-depressive anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, it can purify the skin, assist in healing burns or wounds, improve eczema and psoriasis, reduce acne and restore skin complexion.
The beauty of the Amaze Cream is its combination of 22 rich ingredients, like botanical extracts, vitamins and antioxidants, which work together as a whole to give you long-lasting, healthier, glowing skin.
A lot of people think they don’t have to wash their face in the morning because they just did it at night. But it’s actually a really important step. Your pillow case can accumulate oils, dirt, bacteria and dust from your face and hair, which can build up as you sleep. We encourage you to use a cleanser that suits your skin.
The Aromatherapy Cleansing Gel is crafted with witch hazel, an extremely effective ingredient in Viva’s skincare line, designed to deeply cleanse your pores from sebum, excess dirt and make-up residue all while assisting in renewing skin’s PH and reducing any signs of inflammation - a great way to combat acne. Gently massage two to three pumps onto your face and neck for about a minute, then rinse off with lukewarm water.
Applying the Aromatherapy Facial Toner in the morning is one of the most essential steps because it replenishes hydration and reduces the appearance and tightness of your pores. It preps your skin to absorb more of your moisturizer and other skin treatments. After cleansing, with closed eyes, spray twice over the face and neck. Another unique feature is it can be applied over make-up as a setting spray.
The powerful duo of the Amaze Cream and Solis Mineral Lotion with 20% Zinc Oxide is a great choice because once it's applied to your face it instantly activates a protective barrier to reflect away UVA and UVB rays. Gently apply two to three fingertips of the Amaze cream then top it off with the Solis Mineral Lotion over the face and neck right after cleansing and toning.
When it comes to glowing, healthy-looking skin, moisturizing is a key step in your daily routine. Viva Health Skincare has a variety of hydrating creams packed with nutrient-rich ingredients that are right for you and your skin.

]]>Many people, of all ages, struggle with skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, dry skin, eczema, psoriasis and more. Let’s face it, we all want to look the best we can and feel good about ourselves and our appearance. And there’s nothing wrong with that but for those who struggle with these skin health issues, it's hard to hear that there isn’t a fix.
The gut-brain connection has been known for decades but only now is it getting the attention and legitimacy, it deserves. The health of our gut influences the health of our brains and vice versa, so it really shouldn’t come as a surprise that gut health has an impact on other organs such as the skin.
Over 70 years ago two dermatologists John H Stokes, and Donald M Pillsbury first suggested an overlapping connection between the gut, mood disorders (such as anxiety & depression) and skin conditions such as acne. (1)
Ahead of their time, they proposed that emotional states (stress) might alter normal gut/intestinal gut microflora (microbiota), increase intestinal inflammation and intestinal permeability (a.k.a. leaky gut), and contribute to systemic (whole-body) inflammation. One of the remedies proposed by them was to use the bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus, a common bacteria in cultured/fermented dairy foods at the time, which they used with some success.
The gut provides a barrier between the interior of the digestive tract and the general circulation; all that separates the contents of your intestinal tract from the rest of you. Anything that irritates the lining of your gut can cause it to become inflamed. This could be anything like food allergens, alcohol, medications, antibiotics, common foods of the modern diet like additives and artificial colouring, as well as diets low in fibre and high in sugar. Minimizing gut irritation and inflammation requires looking at your food, beverage, supplements and medication use. Consider your stress levels including adequate sleep, and any undiagnosed food allergies and do what you can to support a healthy gut microbiota/bacterial population.
While eating nutritious food is important, it’s not what you eat but rather what you absorb that’s important when it comes to both skin and overall health which is why getting your gut health in order is priority number one; only then can ensuring you’re getting enough of the skin-supporting nutrients vitamins A, C, E, K2, B3, B5 along with the minerals selenium, zinc, silica and sulfur and omega-3 fats make sense.
While almost all skin conditions are either caused by—or linked to—gut health issues, diagnosing this link can be a complex task. This is because the symptoms we experience when faced with skin health issues are often similar to those we experience when our gut is out of balance. If, for example, we consume something that triggers inflammation in the gut—such as gluten or dairy—we may experience a skin manifestation such as a rash or hives. This link may seem obvious, but it requires that we pay careful attention to our bodies and the substances that trigger a reaction.
Similarly, if we suffer from a leaky gut, we may be unable to fully absorb and utilise the key nutrients, minerals and vitamins that are essential for glowing, healthy skin. Furthermore, if our gut is considered to be ‘leaky’, endotoxins that would ordinarily be processed and expelled may escape into our bloodstream, placing extra pressure on our liver, thereby causing our skin to pick up the slack. A leaky gut also causes inflammation in the body, which is implicated in most skin issues, from acne to eczema and psoriasis.
How can we help our gut?
When it comes to restoring the gut microbiome, one of the best ways is to bolster it with probiotics. Probiotics are live bacteria that we consume, through foods and supplements, to support the gut, immune health and overall wellbeing. Studies focused on the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases (such as irritable bowel syndrome) and inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema and dermatitis, have shown encouraging results regarding probiotics.
Prebiotics are a type of fibre that acts as food for bacteria to support the proliferation of our good gut bacteria. Prebiotics can be found in many high-fibre foods and are essential for supporting a healthy gut, and therefore healthy skin.
You can find prebiotics in foods like onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, oats and apples. Aiming to get a varied intake of fibre-rich fruit and vegetables each day means you're on the right track! Using natural skincare products can also help reduce redness and itchiness on the surface of the skin and help repair the skin barrier.

Whether you're busy or not, it can be tough to set time aside for you. Stress from everyday life impacts us all differently. You may look around and see 1,000 things that need doing and never end up taking a minute to yourself. Taking time to relax when you need it is beneficial for your overall health and mind. Some of the benefits are lower blood pressure, lower risk of heart disease and fewer digestive problems. Relaxation can also help you think more clearly, which leads to better decision-making and improved memory.
You may have heard of the 5 am club, it's a worldwide club that encourages waking up at 5 am to give yourself a full hour to yourself. This means not doing any chores, work or tending to anyone else. It is your time. The theory is that you spend 20 minutes reading, 20 minutes writing and 20 minutes exercising or stretching. Having joined this club, it's a nice way to get some time in for yourself before everyday life hits you. If you aren’t a big fan of waking up at 5 am, maybe you can take this practice into your day another way or time, the idea being that you only spend time on yourself.
So we all have those days where we need to take a step back and refocus our energy on ourselves. Unwinding after having a stressful day is a skill that not many pursue. Keeping yourself busy without taking the time to relax can leave you with a burnt-out mind and body.
Some techniques that help the relaxation process are:
1. Breathwork. Simple? You do this every day. Well not quite. Learning and practising different breathwork techniques will aid you in achieving deeper relaxation. Make you feel a heightened sense of calm and it can reduce your anxiety. Doing breathing exercises before bed can also set you up for a peaceful deep sleep.
2. Meditate. Similar to breathwork in that you become deeply relaxed, however, meditation practises can vary. It tends to be a way of focusing your thoughts inward. Reducing stress is a huge benefit but it can also reduce the risk of heart disease together with high blood pressure. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Follow your breaths as you inhale and exhale. Keep all outside thoughts at bay. You will find it a bit challenging at first but as soon as you catch a thought, focus on your breathing again. Try taking deep breaths as you count to 10.
3. Tea. Drinking a hot cup of herbal tea and having a minute to yourself. Tea is filled with antioxidants and can help with digestion. It can also act as a bedtime ritual to help you feel less stressed.
4. Get outside into nature. Movement can help clear your head, but exercise can also increase endorphins, which helps reduce stress and makes you feel happier. Take a walk at your nearest park or green space. This will help you get in touch with nature and breathe in that much-needed fresh air and can even be a form of meditation. This is due to “involuntary attention” where you might be focusing on something, but you also have enough space to reflect and let your thoughts wander.
5. Disconnect. Put your technology aside and focus on your inner self. By doing this you are disconnecting from all distractions and focusing on expanding your positivity. When you disconnect your stress levels will start to decrease and you will feel more relaxed. Frequent computer and mobile use have been associated with increased stress, sleep deprivation and even depression according to a study from the University of Gothenburg. Taking breaks in between computer use, especially during work or school is essential, and if you find yourself constantly distracted by your phone, consider turning off notifications or the phone itself for a few hours to focus on your tasks.
You can even go further and have a digital detox. Take a day or even a week detached from your mobile devices. This can be a great way to ground yourself and focus on the moment.
6. Rest. Taking a quick 15-30 minute nap can be your restart button. It's understandable if you don't have the time for a short nap but sometimes can be worth it when utilized. If your body and mind don't get rest, your efforts to get things done will have to be doubled which will lead you to a fast burnout.
7. Sleep. Sleep is vital, yet humans often neglect to get a good night’s sleep. The latest TV series on Netflix, or the worry your job may bring, can cause our brains to overwork throughout the night. There are many health benefits to getting enough sleep, such as being more productive, feeling happier, and improving your mental health
8. Music. Some may find listening to music, especially classical music or instrumentals, particularly soothing. This has been shown to slow heart rate, decrease stress hormones and lower blood pressure, but can also be a great way to regain focus, especially when you need to complete a task.
Listening to your favourite music also floods your brain with dopamine, the happy hormone. These are only a few ways that can help you de-stress after continuously working hard and juggling responsibilities. Make sure you find what works best for you and don’t be afraid to try new ways to help you manage stress.
9. Self-Care. Self-care routines are vital for a happy and healthy you! Setting time aside for a relaxing candle-lit bath can help you relax and unwind. Self-care doesn't have to be complex, it could be having your nails done, enjoying your favourite skincare routine or hydrating your face with a mask. My go-to self-care routine is using Viva's Collagen Hyaluronic Acid Mask and having a eucalyptus bath.
]]>That sweet Spring feel is in the air! The days are longer; the flowers are beginning to bloom, you’re wondering what you can do to keep your skin in tip-top condition. Springtime tends to bring changes in humidity, increased sun exposure and outdoor activity (which we love). We have put together our favourite tips to make that transition as smooth as possible for you and your skin.
Step 1: Spring Clean! Nothing says Hello Spring like a spring clean. Clearing out old products is vital if you haven't done a skincare clearout in the last few months. Cleanse and swap out washcloths, sponges, makeup brushes, and applicators accordingly. These are breeding grounds for bacteria, yeast, and mould, irritating our skin and contributing to breakouts and infections. Scrap anything past its expiration date, which is on the bottom of the packaging. Keep in mind that even if a product hasn't been opened, active ingredients will become less potent and less effective over time. It’s best to change your routine each season, with the weather changes- our skin needs different products so now is a good time. Out with the old and in with the new!
Step 2: Exfoliate! Many people avoid exfoliation during the winter months because it can dry out the skin, but as the weather warms up and the humidity increases, we can tolerate acids and stronger formulations of active ingredients. Spring is the prime time to return to exfoliating and brighten all the dull skin accumulation during winter. We recommend giving our Amaze Exfoliating Gel a try! Viva’s exfoliating gel cleans pore impurities and minimizes visible age spots, dark spots, and scarring. It also helps to reduce blackheads, whiteheads, blocked pores, sloth off dead skin layer to reveal a brighter complexion. With its unique combination of ginseng, ginger, aloe vera, dong quai, and hyaluronic acid, the Amaze Exfoliating Gel heals, calms, and helps regenerate the skin for an appearance that is more supple, and resilient. Stick to a routine of using an exfoliator about two to three nights per week or as often as you find necessary for your skin needs.
Step 3: Moisturize! While we may lather our skin in a thick moisturizer in winter, applying a thick cream to a hot sticky face is not as pleasant. When the weather is cold and dry, it's best to use emollients and occlusives to reduce transepidermal water loss. As the temperatures and humidity increase, we may not need such heavy occlusives to keep our skin moisturized, and heavy products can feel sticky and greasy. Lighter moisturizers with humectants and emollients will feel better in Spring. (1) We should be switching to a gel-based formula, which absorbs while protecting the skin barrier. We recommend our Amaze Cream, packed with essential vitamins and antioxidants, and moisturizing herbs such as aloe vera, rosehip oil, and lavender. This formulation also includes powerful botanical compounds: Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and Hyaluronic Acid. Using the Facial Toner to keep your skin moisturized and plump while giving it a tightening effect can also be a great go-to while out and about.
Step 4: Look after your diet and keep it simple! Healthy habits also play a vital role in nourishing your body from the inside out. To keep yourself protected from the elements, remember to apply a non-toxic natural UV protection, exercise regularly, and consume plenty of nutrients. Most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy spring, it means summer is almost here!

Living a sustainable life is a personal philosophy that benefits the world and future generations. Sustainable living is a practical lifestyle that aims to reduce personal and socio-environmental impact by making positive changes that help climate change and other negative environmental concerns. It encourages people to minimize their use of Earth’s resources and reduce the damage of human and environmental interactions. The aim of living sustainably is to achieve an environmental, social and economic balance.
The social equity pillar refers to societal systems and structures that actively support current and future generations’ ability to live healthily and comfortably. Socially sustainable communities are authentically democratic, diverse, equitable, connected, and provide people with a good living standard. [1]
The economic pillar represents strategies used to encourage individuals and corporations to use socio-economic resources to their advantage. Economic sustainability ensures that businesses make a profit without creating social or environmental issues.
The environmental pillar of sustainability is probably the best-known, occurring when processes, systems, and activities minimize the environmental impact of their products, facilities, and operations. It focuses on zero-waste product manufacturing, managing energy consumption, and switching to green energy in offices, headquarter buildings, warehouses, and factories.
Without one of the others, these pillars would collapse, but the three of them together means sustainability in its ideal form. These pillars encourage people, politicians, and businesses to make decisions betting on the long term and taking future generations into account. [2]
With the weight of the world and future generations on your shoulders, you may be asking yourself "what can I do to help?". Here are a few easy tips to get you started.

]]>Chemical vs Mineral Sunscreen.
Do you know the difference between a chemical sunscreen and a mineral sunscreen?
Are you looking for a solution to be able to wear an SPF every day but is non-comedogenic, won't irritate your sensitive skin and can be worn over makeup?
Look no further than our newest blog post to learn all about Chemical Vs Mineral.
]]>Chemical Vs Mineral Sunscreen
We all love spending time in the sunshine, getting the Vitamin D boost and feeling serotonin flowing through our bodies. But we know that the sun, as glorious as she is- can be incredibly harmful to our skin. The sun can damage or kill our skin cells which can lead to skin cancer. By wearing sunscreen every day we may be able to curb the negative effects of sun exposure.
Although there have only been four scientific studies that look at the use and effectiveness of sunscreens when it comes to cancer prevention, skin cancer itself has been rising since the 1950s which is curious when you consider we have more options to choose from.
With the increase in sunscreen recommendations over the years, it could be that the use of sunscreen encourages people to stay in the sun much longer- which in turn increases their exposure and risk of skin cancer. (1) Most people only use ¼ of the amount necessary with each application and don’t reapply as frequently as they should. It is recommended that you reapply sunscreen for as long as you are outside.
When it comes to sunscreen categories, there are two types: chemical and mineral. The main difference between chemical and mineral sunscreens can be found in their ingredient list. Chemical sunscreen causes a chemical reaction by using active ingredients to absorb the sun rays, turn them into heat, and then release the heat through the skin. Chemical sunscreens have ingredients that may potentially cause health problems. Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, use two natural minerals—zinc oxide and titanium dioxide—as active ingredients. These minerals simply sit on top of your skin and protect it by reflecting away UVA and UVB rays. Mineral sunscreen works immediately once applied whereas the chemical takes around 30 mins to be absorbed into the skin.

Zinc Oxide vs Titanium Dioxide
Zinc oxide is currently the only active ingredient (for both chemical and mineral sunscreens) that is “proposed to be safe and effective for sunscreen use” according to the FDA. Titanium dioxide is the other popular mineral that you will find in many sunscreens, however, some studies have shown that this mineral is possibly carcinogenic to humans.
What makes mineral sunscreen safer than chemical sunscreen? The active ingredients in chemical sunscreen can damage your body as they soak in through your skin. Plus, they can be bad for the ocean and sea creatures. Oxybenzone — one of the most common active ingredients in chemical sunscreens — is a hormone disruptor, causes an allergic reaction and contributes to coral reef bleaching when it’s washed off in the ocean. It can be quite irritating to your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin and also worsen melasma and rosacea.
Since zinc oxide is used as a skin protectant, it rarely irritates the skin, making it great for all skin types including sensitive skin, children’s skin and also eczema sufferers. Mineral sunscreens can also be applied on top of makeup and other skin-care products. Zinc oxide sits on top of your skin (rather than soaking in, as chemical sunscreens do) and protects you by scattering, absorbing, and reflecting the sun’s rays.
Nano vs Non-nano Zinc Oxide
Nano Zinc Oxide refers to the particles that are small enough to penetrate your skin and pores. While a nanoparticle will enter your bloodstream and clog the pores, the Non-nano Zinc Oxide particle stays on top of your skin to form a barrier that protects you from the UV. For that reason, Non-nano Zinc Oxide is considered safer and better when it comes to mineral sunscreen.
When choosing a sunscreen, you want to find one that is both safe and effective. Safe means a sunscreen that won’t irritate your skin or harm your body and effective means a sunscreen that effectively protects you from the rays of the sun.
Health advocates, like Amy Myers, MD (www.DrAmyMyers.com), believe zinc oxide sunscreens are better for your body than either chemical-based sunscreens or exposing your skin to the sun without sunscreen. And zinc oxide is the best and safest of the two mineral sunscreen active ingredients because it is truly a broad-spectrum blocker. That means it protects you and your family from both UVA and UVB rays. Titanium dioxide does a good job of keeping UVB rays out, but it’s not as effective when it comes to UVA rays.
Taking care of your skin is important. Sunscreens may provide protection, but you should be careful about which products you choose and be sure you are following the directions for maximum protection. The new Viva Solis Mineral Lotion is a great place to start for everyday wear. After 6 years of careful formulation, the result is pretty impressive. It’s all-natural and offers long-lasting protection without leaving a white residue or grease. Formulated with 20% Zinc Oxide offering, not only an antimicrobial and non-comedogenic benefit, but it also acts as an exceptionally effective shield against the sun and prevents burns and damage. As this lotion is completely titanium-free, and non-nano Zinc Oxide, it is perfect for most skin types and users of all ages!

So why not be as conscious when it comes to your everyday skincare routine?
After all, your skin is your largest organ, working continuously to protect you from chemicals and bacteria. Anything topically applied to your skin will be absorbed into your system; so applying products that contain chemicals is pretty counterproductive to your health. Switching to natural skincare can dramatically overhaul your wellbeing.
A common misconception about natural skincare is that the products are not as powerful and it’s the chemicals that make the products work. This is simply not true. When products are formulated properly they are highly effective. Natural skincare avoids chemicals like parabens, which can be very harsh and sensitize the skin, the skin can become brittle, cracked, red, painful and develop rashes. This is certainly something to avoid. Besides, there are far too many positives to switching to a natural routine.
Let's start with the environmental factors, synthetic chemicals have the potential to harm animals and plants- should the products drain into the ground, they could have devastating consequences on the surrounding ecosystems. Natural ingredients cause no harm to animals, whereas chemical farming contributes heavily to environmental contamination. Global warming is a serious issue right now and is highly impacted by the non-organic cosmetic industry.
Support sustainable farming and reduce your carbon footprint by choosing all-natural ingredients.
The natural skincare industry does not need to test on animals, you’d think that this would no longer be a concern, but it unfortunately still exists in the cosmetic industry.
Thinking back to ancient times, there were no means of mining chemicals in factories, ancient Greeks used milk and honey as facial masks and exfoliated with olives. Search up homemade skincare remedies and you’ll see these ingredients commonly mentioned. That’s because they work, and history knows best.
Here at Viva, we do intensive research to ensure the sustainable sourcing of our ingredients and we work directly with manufacturers across the world to integrate high-quality ingredients.
So, switching to a natural beauty routine will help save the planet, be less toxic to your body and aid in the demise of animal testing. Whilst also providing you with the necessary nutrients that won’t inflame your skin. The majority of natural skincare providers also tend to be fair trade, sustainable and be zero waste. It can be overwhelming to think of the best means of reducing your carbon footprint but starting small and making every day switches is a great place to start.

]]>In today’s modern society, we suffer from inflammation through so many internal and external factors, pollutants, harmful chemicals, processed foods, sugars, stress, etc. Inflammatory pathways can cause breakouts, rashes, premature aging, poor digestion, reproductive issues, hormonal imbalances, and even serious tissue damage and disease, which makes it a pressing battle. Although, inflammation is our immune system’s attempt to alert the rest of the body of potential invaders through deploying white blood cells to protect it, actively incorporating a daily anti-inflammatory diet and compounds in skincare can help reduce and prevent skin flare-ups. Here are a few great allies to consider:
Green Tea
This refreshing, and caffeinated beverage should be a staple in everyone’s daily diet as contains the highest amount of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) which is loaded with antioxidants that fight free-radical damage and can suppress proteins or genes associated with inflammatory enzymes[1].
Licorice Root
Studies show that licorice root contains three triterpenes (chemical compounds with strong antioxidant activity) and 13 flavonoids (which help regulate cell activity and fight free radicals) that show strong anti-inflammatory action. “Traditional Chinese Medicine breaks it down by explaining that it stimulates digestive function, eliminates excess mucus, nourishes qi, and alleviates pain”[2].
Zinc
“While zinc supplements are important for immune support, topical application has profound anti-inflammatory effects on the skin. It has been shown to have photoprotective and soothing agents, and is super effective in treating inflammatory conditions like dermatitis, acne, warts, and rosacea”.
Aloe
Typically associated with soothing sunburns, “aloe vera is an effective anti-inflammatory. It inhibits the cyclooxygenase pathway and decreases the prostaglandin E2 production from arachidonic acid. Moreover, since inflammation is usually caused by oxidative damage due to free radicals, aloe vera acts as an antioxidant that fights free radicals”[3].
Oatmeal
Oatmeal isn't just for breakfast—as it turns out, it can also soothe your skin. It contains sugars which help fight inflammation and soothe red, irritated skin. And because oatmeal is such a gentle ingredient, it's an ideal choice for people that struggle with skin sensitivity and want to incorporate more anti-inflammatory formulas into their skincare regimen.

]]>Consume immunity-boosting foods —Eating healthy foods with vitamin A, C and E (like limes, oranges, red peppers, and leafy greens) are key to fighting off infections. Garlic, ginger, turmeric, and almonds are also big winners when it comes to boosting your health and immunity.
Do smart swaps on comfort foods — There’s nothing like a savory, rich soup on a crisp fall day. Instead of making a calorie rich clam chowder with cream, consider opting for a veggie soup filled with fiber-rich vegetables. Consider swopping butter for coconut oil and heavy creams for coconut milk.
Minimize your sugar intake — It’s easy to raid your kids’ Halloween bag for your favorite treat. Before you know it, it’s only the first week of November and half the bag is already gone thanks to you sneaking a treat every night. Eliminate the temptation and skip the Halloween candy discount aisle, too. Want it out of your house? You can also donate candy to the troops!
Sterilize your most touched items and keep your hand sanitizer nearby — Your cell phone, keyboard, remote, and tablet are all germ habitats. It’s good to make it a habit to sanitize these areas. Try to wash your hands whenever you can with warm soapy water.
Drink lots of water — Don’t be fooled, your body can lose as much fluid in colder climates as it might in hot ones due to the high rates of energy used. Try to drink at least 1-2 liters of water per day. An appropriate water intake will also keep your skin supple, which can be a problem as the weather gets drier.
Switch up your exercise routines — If you live in colder climates, you’re probably more inclined to turn to indoor activities during the colder months. Make it less of a shock by slowly incorporating indoor gym sessions. Try a new class like kickboxing or salsa to get your cardio fix and heart rate up.
Enjoy the cooler weather outdoors — Fresh air is still so important, there’s no better time to enjoy the outdoors. Take in the beauty of the changing leaves, the crisp air, and the sounds of nature. In fact, a walk in nature can boost your mood and creativity while also relaxing you. Some fun fall activities may include fall festivals, pumpkin or apple picking with friends and family.
Change can be hard, try incorporating one tip a week. You may even ask a colleague or friend to join you in checking off each of these tips as you try them. Or consider making it a mini fall challenge.
Have a happy and healthy fall!

]]>Learn how Christina Dieu, an eczema warrior, has treated her eczema successfully, improving her lifestyle and life quality.
Watch the interview on Facebook
Can you describe your eczema? What does it look like? Feels like? Where is it found on your body?
"My eczema is dry, itchy, and scaly. It feels like rough skin and almost like what a reptile would feel like but not as rough. In some cases it can get pretty hard in parts of its healing phases. My eczema is pretty much all over my body. In some places like my neck, arms, and legs it is more prominent."
What causes your eczema to flare up?
"My diet is very important and when I am eating inflammatory foods it can cause my eczema to flare. I generally don’t do any meats, gluten, or dairy. Stress can also cause my eczema to flare up."
Did you have this from a young age?
"I’ve had eczema since I was a child."
How has your eczema affected your lifestyle?
"My condition can be debilitating when it is at its worst. I am learning to except myself and love myself as I am. I am doing everything in my power to avoid it from flaring up through mindfulness, diet, working out, meditation, and just overall awareness of the root cause. I am also working with a natural pathic doctor to help me heal from the gut and inside out."
Can you share with us a few things that have helped?
"I find that my diet is a major contributing factor to my healing process. Cutting out meats, inflammatory foods, gluten, and dairy has been super helpful. I am following a Pitta pacifying diet which is an Ayurvedic approach.
I also started using the Zen Cream from Viva and it has been amazing. It is 100% natural, it does not have chemicals that can be harmful for someone who is already suffering from a skin condition. The Zen Cream has been super alleviating and soothing"
What have you done or changed recently that has made a difference in your skin?
"I have been practicing more mindfulness, meditation, and yoga and just overall general health and fitness. Because working out and all of the above helps with my stress, it also helps with my eczema not flaring up."
What advice can you provide for others that may be going through the same thing and best practices to soothe or prevent flare ups?
"I feel really blessed that I have a lot of resources and great people in my life that are helping me on this healing journey. I would say the most important thing is healing your gut as I do believe the root cause of eczema comes from an unhealthy digestive system. I am working with my naturopathic doctor on this and it has really helped. Another huge thing I would say is focusing on one’s mental health and alleviating stress as much as you can. Stress can be a huge trigger and it can perpetuate eczema flare ups. I highly recommend listening to healing frequency tones, practicing breath work and yoga, and just self-love really."

DMAE (also known as dimethylaminoethanol, dimethylethanolamine, or Deanol) is a compound derived from B vitamin choline most used in dietary supplements to improve mental alertness, much like ginkgo biloba and coenzyme q10. ”DMAE is hypothesized to increase the production of acetylcholine (a chemical that helps nerve cells transmit signals). Since acetylcholine plays a key role in many brain functions, such as learning and memory, proponents claim that taking DMAE in supplement form may boost brain health by raising acetylcholine levels”.[1]
DMAE cream, lotion, and other skin-care products are said to offer anti-aging benefits by:
DMAE not only keeps the cell structure protected, but also diminishes the amount of stress a cell must endure by protecting it and preventing the production of arachidonic acid, which is a chemical in the body that causes both inflammation and pain. The antioxidant and structural support of the cell is what contributes to a firmer and more radiant skin, with less incidence of broken blood vessels, skin discoloration, and wrinkles. Essentially, DMAE is one of the best defenses, not only against natural free radical damage as we age, but also in helping defy the effects of muscular sagging. DMAE penetrates beyond the superficial layer of the skin, making it a powerful method of dealing with wrinkles and lines – some antioxidants only affect the surface of the skin.
Found in our Concentrated Antioxidant Serum, the DMAE is derived from a marine source (anchovies), works quickly to decrease the look of sunspots, scars, fine lines and especially deep wrinkles as it contains 2X the potency as the Amaze Cream. Turn back time by rejuvenating and repairing your skin for a more even and energized complexion. Radiance will be your best accessory.

Turn back the clock with these simple tips:
1. Moisturize
Hydration is key. Don’t let your hands dry out by applying hand cream regularly throughout the day even after washing your hands. The top of your hand is the one area that dries up faster as the skin has no oil glands. We recommend Viva's The One Ultra Rich Hand Cream as it will not only boost moisture levels in the skin but prevent aging and protect your skin from sun exposure. Formulated with coconut oil and mango butter, this hand cream provides the extra nourishment your hands are craving. This hand cream also includes zinc oxide, which is effective at blocking UVA and UVB rays.
2. Protect your skin with gloves
Remember to use gloves in whether harsh cold weather conditions, when performing labour-intensive work around the home such as gardening or renovations, or even when using harsh chemicals, such as strong bathroom soaps containing bleach or even while painting.
3. Eat a healthy diet
A balanced diet with plenty of vitamins, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids nourishes your skin and helps you grow healthy nails. If your diet is lacking certain nutrients, this affects not only your skin but your nails as well.
We’re washing and sanitizing our hands a lot more than we used to, which may break down our skin’s natural moisture barrier. Don’t let rough, dry, and brittle hands expose your golden years. Let this be our little secret 😉
]]>Many of us don’t really know what causes our skin to be sensitive. Moreover, sensitivity can mean different things to different people, from redness to inflammation, blemishes or peeling. Hence, classifying sensitive skin to just one category is kind of impossible as there’s not just one type of sensitive skin. Nonetheless, universally sensitive skin is reactive to its environment instead of adaptive, therefore, understanding the ingredients and formulas in certain products that make you susceptible to breakouts will change the entire beauty game for you. Try gentle and soothing products that will cleanse and nourish the skin without irritation or damage.
2. Sensitive skin is due to an allergic reaction
Not necessarily, allergies usually affect the entire body and not simply the face. Sensitivities arise when the skin’s protective barrier is weakened, making the skin more susceptible to environmental aggressors. This can happen through over cleansing or exfoliating, UV exposure, hormonal changes, and even pollution. Thankfully, you can repair your moisture barrier through ample hydration (inside and out)! Look for products that are deeply hydrating and PH balancing that do not stripe away the friendly oils on the skin. Our antioxidant-rich Aromatherapy Milk Cleanser gently lifts away impurities while actively softening and soothing the skin. Ensure to include products with glycerin and hyaluronic acid as these ingredients can effectively absorb moisture from the air and draw it into the skin. Try incorporating our Aromatherapy Facial Toner and Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum after cleansing.
3. Sensitive skin is typically dry
Although dryness is a primary culprit, do not mix up causality. While sensitive skin may be dry, dry skin might not necessarily be sensitive. Sensitive skin types can be dry, oily, normal and combination. Additionally, many often confuse dry skin with dehydrated skin simply to widen the spectrum. Dehydrated skin lacks water is considered a skin condition, while dry skin lacks natural oils and is a skin type.
4. You will always have sensitive skin no matter what you do
The truth: this is definitely not the case! Many factors play a role with sensitive skin, and stress may be the biggest. Cortisol, the stress hormone, weakens the immune system and damages the skin barrier, so when you’re stressed, your skin feels more sensitive. However, sometimes these stressors may be out of your control. Therefore, here are a few recommendations to help prevent any irritations: use unscented products free from artificial fragrances, thicker moisturizers will lock in a long-lasting hydration, use an SPF daily, limit hot baths as extremely warm water can irritate skin and find products that contain oat as the properties improve dryness and soothe irritation. Our Aromatherapy Milk Cleanser would be a great option as it is formulated with a blend of oat protein filled with rich vitamins and antioxidants.
Our last and perhaps most important recommendation is always patch-test new products before trying them on your face. Rub a small amount on your wrist or an area of your neck and wait 24 hours to see if any redness or irritation develops – if not, you’re good to go! While there may not be a clear answer as to the causes of your sensitive skin, we understand the trial-and-error process may be difficult to understand your skin, but we hope this little blog helped mystify a few skin myths.

Drying, itching, rashes, and redness – may indicate a multiple number of skin conditions such as rosacea, psoriasis and eczema. Here’s our guide to help you identify your symptoms, possible natural treatments, things to avoid helping prevent any flare ups and some big news to share!
]]>Drying, itching, rashes, and redness – may indicate a multiple number of skin conditions such as rosacea, psoriasis and eczema. Although chronic, these skin conditions are usually non-life-threatening. Unpleasant and discomforting as they may be, symptoms can disappear and go into remission with the proper regimen and treatment. Here’s our guide to help you identify your symptoms, possible natural treatments, and things to help prevent any flare ups.
Psoriasis:
Psoriasis is an immune triggered dysfunction that treats your skin like a foreign invader. The body usually grows and sheds skin cells every 30 days. However, for those with psoriasis, the immune systems go into overdrive, producing new skin cells every 3-4 days but instead of shedding the new skin, the skin piles up at the surface creating thick, red patches, also recognized as plaque psoriasis, topped with white scale. These plaques tend to be itchy, tender, and scaly and can be triggered by stress, certain medications, or skin injury.
Natural treatments:
Rosacea:
Usually common amongst individuals between 30-50 years old and generally with fair skin, rosacea is caused by broken capillaries that rush blood cells to the surface of the skin. It primarily occurs on the face and usually distinguished by redness, bumps or severe blushing. It is difficult to determine what triggers rosacea as this may differ from one individual to another, but it is recommended to note down when flare-ups happen and back track on key contributing factors, such as stress, spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine, cosmetic products and etc.
Natural Treatments:
Eczema:
Starting typically at a young age, eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is an inherited skin condition that goes well beyond the surface of the skin. People with eczema have an over-reactive immune system triggered by external and internal factors by producing inflammation visible through red, itchy patches. Similarly, to psoriasis or rosacea, it is important to be mindful of triggers such as certain clothing detergents, dust, cold weather, fragrances and etc.

]]>Nutrition and diet are evidently correlated to your overall health. But can your diet affect your skin? We’ve all heard “you are what you eat”, but can it really show on your skin or worse cause uncontrollable breakouts? Although, there is still no hard evidence that can answer the true cause of blemishes, we found a few facts that may suggest certain foods may play a big role in preventing your best glowing skin:
1. Refined Grains and Sugars:
Studies have shown that people with acne tend to consume more refined carbohydrates and high added sugar diets than people with little or no acne. Foods to look out for would be bread, desserts with white flour, white flour kinds of pasta, sodas, and certain sweeteners like cane sugar and agave.
This result may be explained by the increase in blood sugar and insulin levels. As blood sugar and insulin levels spike androgen hormones are more active and contribute to acne development by developing more skin cells and boosting sebum production.[1]
2. Dairy Products:
“Two studies also found that young adults who regularly consumed milk or ice cream were four times more likely to suffer from acne”1. It is not yet clear how cow’s milk contributes to acne, but milk is also known to increase insulin and contains amino acids that stimulate the liver which can be linked to acne development.
3. Fast Food:
Eating a heavily western-style diet rich in calories, fat and refined carbohydrates are typically associated with acne. “One study of over 5,000 Chinese teenagers and young adults found that high-fat diets were associated with a 43% increased risk of developing acne. Regularly eating fast food increased the risk by 17%. A separate study of 2,300 Turkish men found that frequently eating burgers or sausages was linked to a 24% increased risk of developing acne.”1 It is still unclear why fast food may increase the development of acne, but research suspects it is due to the fact that these types of foods alter hormone levels.
4. Omega-6 Fatty Acids:
“Diets rich in omega-6 fatty acids and low in omega-3s are pro-inflammatory and may worsen acne”1, such foods include corn, soy oils and more.
5. Chocolate:
“Exactly why chocolate might increase acne is unclear, although one study found that eating chocolate increased the reactivity of the immune system to acne-causing bacteria, which may help explain these findings.”1
Acne is strongly linked to inflammation and therefore it is also suggested to refrain from any food sensitivities that may trigger your immune system as a food threat and aggravate inflammation in the body. Here are some nutrients that are anti-inflammatory and can help to keep your skin clear: omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, green tea, turmeric, vitamin A and zinc. All these nutrients contribute to reducing inflammation by play a crucial role in lowering blood sugar levels, providing gut-friendly bacteria, and strengthening your immune system. You can find these anti-acne nutrients in foods such as leafy greens, fruits, nuts, fish, whole grains, and legumes. You are one step closer to clearer skin! 😉

Overprotecting the skin with super rich creams can sometimes make skin a little “lazy” (for a lack of better words), as the excess of overly rich products can sometimes do all the hard work, without giving your skin a chance to adjust itself, unless you suffer from skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema-prone skin. Which leads to our next point…
Just like you probably would not wear a wool sweater in the middle of July, tweaking a few skincare products during the summer season would be more than plenty for the perfect glow. If you use a milk cleanser, perhaps switch to a gel or foaming cleanser, and more light-weight moisturizers.
As much as summer is synopsis to long days spent in the sun, our biggest tip is staying cool in the shade… minimize your skin’s sun exposure and avoid burning at all costs! Tanned skin is usually a sign of cellular damage, which is also synopsis with premature aging and a “weathered” complexion (pone intended).
Irregular hyperpigmentation can sometimes worsen during the summer months, unfortunately, even after all the great sun protection. Therefore, we recommend a great high-grade vitamin C serum that protects against the appearance of fine lines, helps stimulate collagen production and prevents pigmentation. Another great anti-pigment ingredient is Kojic Acid that not only contains antimicrobial properties but is primarily used to lighten visible signs of sun damage and age spots.

]]>As studies show, prebiotics consumed-orally play an important role in supporting the effectiveness of probiotics in feeding microorganisms in your gut, influencing overall health and well-being. “Prebiotics are fibers of foods that promote the growth and activity of the beneficial bacteria in our gut. […] Prebiotics are more than just food for probiotics; they also confer benefits to our health by selectively altering our gastrointestinal microflora composition and activity. This means that prebiotics can positively affect the way individual strains of the microflora in our digestive systems grow and function.” Versus, probiotics are gut-friendly bacteria that support the body’s immune response by stimulating immune cells needed to fight infection.”
Benefits of prebiotics in skin care
Although prebiotics seems to be the neglected organism outcasted by its sister, probiotics, prebiotics are proving to be imperative to protecting the skin’s physical barrier from harmful environmental elements and work in balancing the skin from good and bad bacteria. “The skin being in constant alkalization has the capacity to throw the acidic mantle out of balance. Once that happens, you're more at risk for skin inflammation, dermatitis, eczema and atopic skin diseases.” In addition, to incorporating a well-balanced diet containing both prebiotics and probiotics, skin care products with prebiotics are essential for a hydrated radiant complexion.
Ingredients to look for in prebiotic skin care
Foods with prebiotics include garlic, onions, oats, dandelion lead, asparagus, potatoes, bananas, and flaxseed as well as a plant fiber known as inulin, found in chicory root, are equally used as plant extracts in skin care products where you can easily reap the benefits of applying prebiotics to skin. The Bio Foaming Cleansing is especially formulated with potato protein enzymes and apple cider vinegar. The potato protein enzyme is rich in essential nutrients such as potassium and vitamin C. Therefore, helps lighten dark spots related with skin freckles, sunspots and melasma meanwhile also containing anti-inflammatory properties reducing acne and redness. Concurrently, the apple cider vinegar relies on fruit acids known as acetic acid and malic acid, compounds that are antibacterial and antifungal.
Who should use skin care with prebiotics?
Pretty much anyone can use prebiotic skin care products as it is a stable and balance microbiome. Prebiotic skin care products are essentially suited for sensitive skin type such as acne prone skin and those with other skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea and psoriasis as it can help boost the skin’s production of healthy bacteria and build immunity to harmful organisms.

]]>Let’s break down how enzymes perform in the body for a better understanding on how they affect our skin care. Enzymes are living organisms that help perform very important tasks. “An enzyme is a type of protein found within a cell” and helps speed up the rate of chemical reactions to help support vital functions such as building muscle, destroying toxins and break down food particles for digestion.
Enzymes are found naturally in the body but can be found in foods rich of these proteins and in fact such foods can boost enzyme activity in your body. “In addition to your diet habits, your body’s overall state of health will also affect how well it produces, stores, and releases enzymes and how efficiently enzymes function. This will vary from one person to the next.”
What do Enzymes do for Your Skin?
“Enzymes break down the keratin protein in the upper layer of the skin, which bonds dead skin cells together. Without this, the dead skin can gently slough off. This results in smoother, softer skin and helps diminish scars and pigmentation.”
"Most of the enzymes used in skincare products are sourced from fruits and vegetables, such as papaya, pineapple and pumpkin. These enzymes are called proteolytic enzymes and their role is to break down proteins."
“[In short], enzymatic exfoliation enhances dead skin cell turnover, thereby unclogging pores and revealing new more vibrant cells. These newer cells provide for better penetration of products and more vibrant skin,” says Bella Schneider, a celebrity esthetician and product formulator. “Further, enzymes also speed up cellular function when used both topically and internally, and enzymes can fight against free radicals and oxidation, protecting skin from environmental damage.”
Which Skin Type are Enzymes Most Suited For?
Skin care products rich with enzymes are suited for most skin types and for various issues. “Enzymes are a great choice for those with sensitive skin, as they provide a gentle way to exfoliate and brighten. They’re also an option during pregnancy,” says Dr. Hadley C. King, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. “Enzymes a great choice for those who find are unable to tolerate acids and need a gentler touch” because they do disrupt the skin’s natural PH balance.
To wind it all up
Enzymes can be used from top to toe to gently exfoliate, brighten, and smooth the skin. "Enzymes are sensitive souls and they need to be looked after and stored carefully. Changes in temperature and pH can render them inactive (known as denaturing) and it’s very tricky to determine whether or not they are still working. [Therefore], at home, keep your enzyme products in a cool dark place and make sure the packaging is properly sealed to prevent contamination.”
Recommended enzyme-rich products:
BIO FOAMING CLEANSER: This cleanser is great as a facial and body wash for an all-over clean that leaves your skin refreshed and soft. Rich with prebiotics derived from potato protein enzyme and apple cider vinegar, perfect for sensitive skin by improving redness, irritation, and blemishes.

Exfoliate away flaky skin
It’s time to slough away dull tired skin and blocked pores by using a gentle exfoliator to reveal a bright healthy complexion underneath! Certain exfoliators can be abrasive by not only striping the skin of its physical moisture barrier, but it can also create invisible microtears that can promote skin damage and other issues such as redness and inflammation that can cause sensitivity and irritation. Our Viva Health Skincare Amaze Exfoliating Gel is a gentle smooth exfoliator that can be used every day, depending on your skin type. We recommend for sensitive skin to exfoliate 2-3 times per week. Made with ginger root, ginseng, white tea and hyaluronic acid, this gel lifts and removes dead skin cells from the surface. When we say lifts and removes, quite literally this gel does exactly that! While massaging the smooth cool gel in circular motions, smalls bead of dead skin cells begin to form and flake yesterday’s problems, reveal polished radiant skin. Our little miracle in jar!
Swapping to a lightweight regime
Sunny days mean our skin can typically retain its natural moisture more easily, requiring lighter layers of hydration. This is especially true if spending more time outdoors is your go-to. By creating these light layers with your skincare routine, you create a light moisture barrier that is just as effective. A simple way to do so is by using our Aromatherapy Facial Toner as a mist that’s packed with nourishing ingredients for the skin. Our mist infused with calendula and lavender water, rose oil extract, and witch hazel, restores your skin’s PH and improves skin tone. Follow it up with our Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum, packed with antioxidants, this serum is a water-soluble and holds 1000x times its weight in water. It is all about nourishing your skin with effective and powerful ingredients, and highlighting your dewy glow nourishing your skin with what it needs during the warmer weather. 3 words: hydration, hydration, hydration!
Switch your Eye Cream
Warm heat and sunlight beaming on your face, but find yourself squinting even through your shades? If premature fine lines and crows feet are your concern, ensure to apply a pea-size amount of our Firming Eye Cream infused with green tea extract and cucumber to plump and firm the delicate skin area.
Minimize
Keep it simple! Simplifying your morning and night skincare routine with products containing powerful superfood ingredients are essential when seasons change. However, perhaps the most important piece of the puzzle is to spring-clean; not throwing away expired products or washing away dirt off your make up brushes often is the perfect breeding ground for yeast and bad bacteria that no one wants! Overall healthy habits also play a vital role by nourishing your body inside and out. Remember by applying a non-toxic natural UV protection, exercising regularly, and consuming nutrients that are perfect you mean it is perfect for your skin.
]]>Washing your hands is very essential to our daily life. Soap and water is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. If you cannot use soap and water, you can use a hand sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol to cleanse the hands, but it does not get rid of all types of germs. More importantly, you should remember to wash your hands after these key times:
Washing hands more often is good for your health, but it may not be good for your hands when you wash it too often. The soap and hand sanitizer remove the natural lipids on your hands, which can make it dry and brittle. It is important to put on a layer of moisturizer to protect your hands after washing or sanitizing. If you have a wound on your hand, you need to take care of the wound first. By using a natural moisturizer, it can offer you better care of your hands, and can prevent second damage from some chemical ingredients and fragrance.
With Viva’s The One Ultra Rich Hand Cream, you are in good hands. We added coconut oil, which replenishes the skins barrier, and seals in the moisture to keep it healthy and young looking. The zinc oxide can effectively protect your hands from UVA and UVB, and slow the aging process. We also added aloe vera extract and mango butter in it, where the aloe vera can help with soothing the skin, is anti-inflammatory, and it provides deep hydration to prevent irritation and cracking of the skin. Additionally, Mango butter boosts the hydration level for this hand cream as well.
We made this hand cream with no scent on purpose because many people may be sensitive to certain smells, and since we are washing our hands more than ever before, we ultimately will also use more hand cream than ever before. Keeping it unscented allows for all day application without compromising yours and other people’s sensitivities, especially in the workplace. Even with The One Ultra Rich Hand Cream being unscented, the hand cream still smells so good and velvety.
