Spring Clean Your Skin Routine!

Spring Clean your Skin Routine

With the cold, dry winter behind us and the warmer days coming, now is the perfect time to revisit your beauty and skincare regime.

While some of us have a certain skin type, which is more or less the same all year round, most of us have seasonal skin, which requires some specialized attention as the weather changes (for better or worse).  So, gone are the days of needing a heavy duty, cold barricading, suit of armour for our skin. Now is the time to let skin breathe & get rid of all those dead winter skin cells dulling our complexion. It’s time to shine and reveal the glowing skin underneath that we’ve spent all winter protecting and treating.

Here are some of our favourite ingredients to look out for to get skin glowing for Spring:

Hyaluronic Acid (aka Sodium Hyaluronate) – this naturally occurring carbohydrate presents itself in the spaces between skin cells, providing moisture & plumpness. Ever wonder why babies are born looking so plump with perfectly smooth skin? They are full to the brim of this stuff! Unfortunately as we age we lose significant amounts of Hyaluronic Acid, especially after the age of 40. The great news is this amazing ingredient is widely available in topical creams and serums. As a bonus it works on all skin types (yes, even oily) to improve skin elasticity, firmness and tone. Products containing Hyaluronic Acid were our top recommended and top sellers at Anise Apothecary all through winter to add and retain moisture in the skin. Even with the changing seasons, this ingredient plays a vital role in the appearance of smoother, younger looking skin.

Vitamin C – Essential for collagen production and therefore improving skin elasticity, this common vitamin is seriously trending in the beauty industry. By using Vitamin C topically you can not only protect against sun damage (not a sun block replacement), but also reverse the signs of sun & age-related skin damage such as sun spots, discoloration & fine lines. In addition, Vitamin C boosts skin’s radiance & brightens the skin! This ingredient is great for mature skin types with visible signs of ageing and damage.

So, as well as looking for natural beauty products containing the best forms of the above ingredients don’t forget to:

EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE, AND EXFOLIATE!  - Now, we’re not talking hardcore scrubbing on your delicate facial skin but daily or weekly exfoliation is key for a dewy, youthful complexion. Get rid of those dull dead skin cells and feed the new ones with great products containing the above mentioned ingredients and let those new skin cells glow!

PROTECT WITH A NATURAL SPF – Avoid damaging your skin by using an all natural non-nano, zinc oxide based sunscreen. SPF15 – SPF30 is more than enough for sufficient sun protection. Always apply under makeup and reapply every couple hours if sun exposure is prolonged or you’re in contact with water. Also, look for sun protection products containing Red Raspberry Seed Oil. Studies have shown that this oil possesses similar sun protection properties to Titanium Dioxide, with an SPF against UVB rays of 28-50 and UVA rays around 8.

Now that your skincare routine is Spring approved let’s get to the fun stuff…colour!

Along with the cliché (but every beautiful) pastels, the colour trends for Spring 2015 are also focused on understated brights & nature-inspired neutrals.

At Anise, we loved the Dolce & Gabbana Spring Ready-to-Wear beauty look so we are focusing on having fun with colour through lip products, keeping the foundation light & clean with just a flush of colour on the cheeks, eye makeup to a minimum and a bold sweeping of colour staining the lips.

A true red is classic all year round. Bring it into the light and update the shade with one that has an undertone of orange. Wearable on sunny days and dramatic enough to carry into the night.

Keep it fun and flirty with a baby pink. Not a shade for everyone (skins with a yellow undertone may struggle with this one) but variations with neutral or coral undertones work well for most.

If you’re lucky enough to have gotten some winter sun and your skin is a lovely golden brown or if you want to fake it til you make it then this ones for you. Update the nude lip look with a subtle bronze or gold shimmer. Add some bronzer to the cheekbones and some strategically placed highlighter and you’ll look like you never saw winter!
