Eczema-Prone Skin: How to Choose and Use Skincare Products

What is eczema?

In Canada, where winters are cold and dry and summers can be humid, many people experience itchy, red patches or bumps on their skin. In more severe cases, these areas may ooze fluid or become crusty. Many of these symptoms fall under the broad category of eczema.

Eczema is an umbrella term for various types of dermatitis, including atopic dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, contact dermatitis, and asteatotic eczema (dry skin eczema).
It’s believed to be caused by a combination of factors such as genetics, immune system responses, and environmental triggers.

How does eczema affect the skin barrier?

In eczema-prone skin — especially for those with atopic dermatitis — the skin barrier is compromised, leading to increased transepidermal water loss.
This means irritants, allergens, and bacteria from the environment can more easily penetrate the skin, creating a cycle of inflammation and flare-ups.

Using the right skincare products can help:

  • Form a protective layer to lock in moisture.

  • Soothe itchiness, reducing scratching and further skin damage.

Types of Moisturizers for Eczema-Prone Skin

  1. Lotions

    • Highest water content of the three types.

    • Lightweight and easy to spread, with a cooling feel as the water evaporates.

    • Less effective for sealing in moisture compared to creams or ointments — may not be enough for very dry skin.

  2. Creams

    • A balanced mix of water and oils, with higher oil content than lotions.

    • Provides better hydration and barrier support while still absorbing easily and feeling comfortable for daily use.

  3. Ointments

    • Highest oil content, thicker texture, and more occlusive.

    • Best for very dry or cracked skin, offering maximum moisture retention.

    • Less suitable for microbial growth, so often contain fewer preservatives — a plus for sensitive or allergy-prone skin.

Tips for Choosing Eczema-Friendly Skincare

  • Check the ingredient list if you know you have allergies to certain components.

  • Patch test new products by applying to a small area (like the inner arm) for 1–2 days before using widely.

  • Adjust seasonally — richer, oil-based products for fall/winter; lighter, water-based ones for spring/summer.

How to Use Skincare for Eczema-Prone Skin

  • Apply a moisturizing product at least twice a day; increase frequency if skin feels very dry.

  • After bathing, gently pat skin dry with a towel and apply moisturizer immediately to seal in moisture.

  • Continue using moisturizers even after eczema improves — studies show this can reduce flare-up frequency.

  • Choose simple formulas — fragrance and preservatives can sometimes cause irritation.

  • During flare-ups, see a dermatologist for proper treatment. Pair prescribed medication with consistent moisturizing for best results.
